Most of us know the story, in Luke 10, about Mary and Martha. Martha is serving her guests, while Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus. Over the years, a lot of people have thrown Martha under the bus, and have elevated Mary. Jesus never said, however, that we had to choose to be one or the other. He said, “If you had to make a choice, Mary’s way would be better.” But I’m here to share some good news with you—we don’t have to make a choice!
It’s not “either or”; it’s “both and.” In your organization, you want people who are both spiritual and serving. You want people who are worshipping and working. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our assimilation plan incorporated raising people up in both areas? We serve the Lord with gladness, and we also worship Him! This is spirituality and service together.
So when you have people in your organization—especially in church—who are only serving, I want to ask you: how are they doing spiritually? There are some people who are very good in their spiritual life: how are they serving? Because serving people need spirituality, and spiritual people need to serve. We need to be both Mary and Martha.
