This is an important question; however, it shouldn’t be our primary one. The life we live isn’t about answers, or telling people to do things. Rather, we focus on asking good questions, understanding that our teammates are reservoirs of understanding and insight. Creating our destiny involves our thoughts, actions, and our destiny: the direction in which we’re taking our team.
Organizational success has everything to do with how you align your resources. Our vehicle must be aligned with our vision. When things are out of alignment, we’ll never reach the destination we desire. However, when we align our tactical, organizational, and personal resources, we’ll discover destinations we never thought possible.
On every sports team is a coach who helps team members fulfill their responsibilities. Too often, however, our organizational teams end up coaching themselves! Being able to measure your objectives and key results is a major factor in coaching your team successfully. You’ll also need people with specific characteristics to get the job done.
Everybody wants to go to the next level. The most important ingredient of growth is something we tend to avoid: conflict. The secret to maturity is embracing, and putting supreme value on, conflict. The truth is that everyone will have conflict at some point in life. Whether or not we can resolve conflict healthily will determine where we go next. Conflict is the stepping stone to your destiny.
You are where you are today because of somebody else. There’s no such thing as a self-made man or woman; rather, we are all a product of someone else’s discovery. In your leadership, be looking to discover others’ gifts, passions, and wavelengths. When we notice and take interest in people, we give them opportunities to go higher. Success is never something you can count; rather, your success is defined by the people you’ve raised higher.
There’s a big difference between having a vision and knowing how to communicate that vision. If you don’t know how to cast, you won’t catch any fish! You need a picture, a plan, and the right people to cast your vision well. The most important part of casting vision is having the right people. Once you have a team behind you, and you’re caring for that team, you can chase after your vision together!
What is it about me that will keep me from becoming all that I’m destined to be?’ We need to ask ourselves this question consistently. It’s a transformational question, and one we’ll always be answering for the rest of our lives. We are always becoming— always in process. Keep asking yourself what’s holding you back, and you’ll keep moving forward. The only person standing in your way is you.
